The only thing standing between them was the closed door to her room. She knew he was in the house somewhere and all she had to do was walk out and find him.
And take him.
They hadn't talked about the kiss. But she'd spent the night in his arms and slept better than she could dream.
Who needed words? They were wolves. They demanded action.
Instead, she stretched some more as she stewed.
It didn't have to mean anything. She could walk outside, find Bryan, have some fun, and call it done as soon as they finished. Or as soon as they left this house.
Liar.
If she couldn't convince her conscious mind, there was no way she'd convince her heart of that. Kerry wasn't a woman built for casual, especially not when the wolf that lived in the heart of her was demanding something more serious than she'd ever imagined.
Mate.
She shuddered at the thought, a mix of fear and wanting swirling inside of her and leading to more confusion. What did that really mean? And how could she just know or think she knew? She researched things. Deliberated. Tested out her options. She'd never once looked at something and known it would be hers.
So how could Bryan Vega be different?
If her wolf was listening to her inner turmoil, it didn't deign to give a response to that. Great. Now Kerry was thinking in multiple personalities. Where would that lead? She didn't think they had rooms for werewolves in the mental hospital.
Bryan tapped lightly on her door and Kerry stared for a moment, her wants and needs and doubts all jumbled together.
She was being a baby. A stupid, cowardly baby. She couldn't just hide in her room all night. And she wasn't going to let fear rule her, not here. She had real reasons to fear, reasons that involved scary men with big guns. But those men weren't here right now, and she had no need to fear Bryan.
He'd never hurt her.
She opened the door and there he was. His scent wafted over her, masculine with a faint hint of pine.
"Hey." He smiled, leaning against the door frame. "Are you going to want pizza for dinner? Otherwise, there's a small shop down the street from the pizza place. I can probably find enough for dinner."
"I'm not hungry." The turmoil of the last couple of days had thrown her internal schedule completely off kilter, and Kerry wasn't sure if she'd ever want to eat again.
"Oh. Okay." He kept leaning there, not saying anything. Maybe he didn't know what to say to her.
She felt the same. But she didn't want him to go.
And when he rolled back on his heel, she shot her arm out to catch him. Their eyes met, gazes clashing, and Kerry saw the war in herself reflected in her expression. Whatever was going on, she wasn't alone.
To hell with hesitating.
Kerry stepped forward, wrapped her hand around the back of Bryan's neck, and pulled him down to kiss her.
