"Well, look who's back causing trouble," a smooth Southern voice said, stopping me in my tracks.
My gaze darted to the entryway chair at the base of the staircase. Nico's friend Wyatt sat with his hand around a mug of coffee, one ankle resting on his knee. His cowboy boots and western-style shirt seemed at odds with the blond hair obscuring the side of his face and the casual nature he was affecting.
No, this Wyatt was harder than the man I'd met before, his stare less jovial, his jaw tighter.
He tipped his chin at my hand, as he brushed the hair from his face, revealing a gnarled scar spanning the world of his cheek and down his neck into the collar of his shirt. "That's new."
Looking down, I realize my hand was engulfed in flames. "Oops. It is. It seems to pop up when I'm startled. I'll... get the hang of it."
I hope.
Concentrating, I willed the fire away, and by some miracle, it actually listened to me. "See?"
"Your mate know you're galivanting about? I sorta figured he'd be surgically attached to you for the rest of forever." He sent me a censuring eyebrow raise as he sipped his coffee.
I waggled my now-fire-free hand. "I left him a note. I tried waking him up, but I don't think he's slept right in years. Waking him when he was that peaceful just seemed wrong, you know?"
Plus, I had shit to do before the whole of the world went tits-up. You know, priorities.
"If you say so."
I raised my own eyebrow. "How patronizingly noncommittal of you, Wyatt."
At my ire, Ghost showed the big man his teeth. All of them. No growl, but the goal was achieved when Wyatt held his hands up in surrender.
Good puppy, I thought, chuckling to myself.
Ghost straightened and leveled me with a wolfy glare fit for instant death. I am not a pup. Ghost is ancient.
"Whoa, now, I didn't mean anyth--"
But I ignored Wyatt to respond to Ghost.
"All dogs are puppies. Old dogs are puppies, puppies are puppies, and even ancient, spirit-ripped wolves who do awesome things are good puppies. Take a compliment, Ghost."
Not a pup.
"Fine. I will never call you a puppy again, you temperamental beast."
Ghosts ears perked up. Beast. I like beast. Call me a good beast.
I snickered. "Beast it is."
