A blink later, Dane realized that he and Avery were standing close together inside a windowless room that was completely dark. His heart rate spiked, causing his pulse to begin pounding in his ears. As the faint odors of cleaning solutions began filling his nose, he realized that he had brought Avery into the community center's little supply closet.
"Dane? Oh, Dane?" Mrs. Foster's voice crescendoed as she reached the hallway. She could be heard scuttling past the closed door of the supply closest as she continued down the corridor. "Dane, where did you go? We really must discuss the proper shade of green for the napkins!"
Mrs. Foster's footsteps and voice echoed away, and then everything got quiet.
