Excerpt
The knock on the door had her startling so hard she nearly passed out. She opened the door cautiously, half expecting it to be Olron who for some reason had decided to knock, but it wasn't him. It was Brinan holding a tray of food.
"Olron sent this for you," Brinan said.
Feylin stared at the tray in confusion before her stomach growled so loudly it sounded like a wounded animal. It was then that she realized that she hadn't eaten since breakfast. She hesitated for a moment before deciding to eat; she needed her wits about her if she had any hope of detangling herself from this mess.
It was a wasted effort; the food could have been ash for all she cared. Her mind was in an endless race of thoughts, bouncing between Olron and Storm. She couldn't believe how quickly things had spiraled out of control. Just days ago, she was living peacefully in the palace in Gravindale, basking in Zarius's attention. Zarius, the wonderful green mage who had treated her with more love than she had in her entire lifetime, the third Commander of the Gravindale army.
He had discovered that Storm had rejected her, and he had stepped in to be her tether so that she would not die. The drawback to the mate bond was that if one mate rejected the other, it could be fatal. The only solution was a tether for the rejected mate, someone with whom they had a strong enough emotional connection who would tether their soul to this plane so that the didn't slip into the mate madness, which eventually led to death.
Most rejected mates killed themselves before that ever even occurred. However, soulmates were rare in Gravindale ever since the dark fae had been expelled from the Kingdom. Rare still were rejected mate bonds. The mate bond was a gift from the Fates, two halves of one soul joined together by them. Very few rejected it.
Her mate was one of those very, very few, and she was the lucky lady who had had to deal with the rejection. But deal with it she had, like all the other rejections she had faced in her life; first her mother, then her stepfather, then her mate.
To add icing on that cheery cake, she had found a way to bond herself to Olron, the dark mage. Now she was trapped in a palace with a new mate who had every intention of claiming her body as his possession.
Tears stung Feylin's eyes as she pushed away the rest of the food on the tray. She couldn't bring herself to keep eating. She resumed pacing.
When Olron finally did arrive, he didn't bother to knock. He swept into the room with the arrogance of a true prince, his presence filling the space with an oppressive air. Feylin's breath caught in her throat, her knees threatening to buckle beneath her as she instinctively shrank back. He moved with a fluid grace, crossing the room in a few measured steps before sinking into the only chair like a king claiming his throne. His eyes were once again a deep, beautiful blue as he held her gaze.
"Take your clothes off." The command hung in the air, sharp, cold and unyielding. It wasn't a request; it was an order.
