Publisher: Janey King
Pages: 250

Synopsis:
Fate never gives you everything you want. But sometimes, when you least expect it, you get exactly what (or who) you need...

Hannah's life has suddenly become a lot less. Jobless, homeless, and boyfriend-less, that is. Now, all she wants is a fresh start--and her sister's charming small town is the perfect setting for it. Finding a new romance is nowhere on her agenda. Too bad her heart (the stupid organ that beats a little faster every time her new boss is near) didn't get the memo.

Collin hasn't been lucky when it comes to romance, either. But knowing he's not cut out for love doesn't stop him from wanting his beautiful new employee with an intensity that terrifies him. He barely survived losing his fiancee. Losing Hannah... well, he's afraid there wouldn't be any coming back from that.

Can Hannah and Collin overcome the pain of their pasts--and the secrets they're both still carrying--to take a shot at happily ever after? Or are they destined to remain star crossed forever?

Where We Begin, book 1 in The Berkshires series, is a lightly angsty, and sweet new adult contemporary romance featuring a down-but-not-out heroine and the beaten-but-not-broken hero of her dreams. Download today and get ready to fall in love with your next favorite book boyfriend.

Review:
Quarantine is a introverted bookworms excuse to crack open a lot of the books that have been collecting dust on our e-readers and bookshelves. If you're going to have to stay indoors and avoid the spread of a virus, what better way than to escape in the pages of a book. While being a mom to a rambunctious 5-year-old during this time has left many a book neglected, I have finally found the time to curl up with my favorite quilt, a chilled cup of ice coffee (I live in Florida, warm beverages are not very popular), and my reassuring e-reader. Where We Began seemed to be a good place to start at witling away at the old TBR.

Hannah has found herself tucking tail and leaving her life in New York City after being dumped by her boyfriend to find solace in the home of her adopted sister, Cassie. While she knows her brother-in-law would sooner chew glass than have Hannah staying with him, she would much rather focus on spending much needed quality time with her twin nieces and loving sister. However, she knows that eventually she will have to come back down to reality and rebuild her life. The first step: a job. The coffee shop down the street would be perfect as its within walking distance and the barista, Layla, makes her feel like she's the long lost friend she never knew she was missing. Then she meets him

Collin's life is a circle of misery and guilt over the loss of his fiancée two years prior. His love life is not even a blip on his radar. But when his eyes lock on the feisty female klutz spilling coffee all over the floor of his coffee shop, he wonders if he has been alone too long. But the circumstances of his fiancée's death hangs like a shadow over his budding romance with Hannah. He has to tell her the truth but he can't find the words. But Hannah may be hiding something painful from her past as well. Will the two open up their hearts again for a perfect future or will their past ruin everything?

As with any book I read, I like to highlight the pros and the cons I found in the story, structure, and characters I encounter. Some of the pros lie in the likeability of the characters. Hannah and Collin, while having some flaws in logic over their issues, were delightfully well constructed. Hannah was feisty but also clumsy to the point of comedy. Collin was stoic but also has a silly side that complimented Hannah well. But the true stars of the book were Collin's Aunts. They were the funny no-filtered sass machines that we all long to have in our own elderly relatives. Lucy and Ethel meets Laverne and Shirley on an older scale would be how I would best imagine them. The antics they could have could fill the pages of their own stories.

One of the more pronounced critique I have for this story is the structure. The story had promise. It could have gone a plethora of different ways. There were many potential antagonists and situational hurdles that were not utilized. It was only in the last few pages of the book that the actual antagonist was introduced and then it left on a cliffhanger. It was similar to waiting and waiting for something exciting to happen and then getting just a taste of what that excitement could be before being told it was over. It felt like the author struggled to find a new obstacle once the main reason for the couple being apart was dissolved. Between the snarky brother-in-law, the narcissistic ex-boyfriend, the potential distance if Hannah chooses to leave, you'd think the main conflict would not be some random character dragged into the story on the last few pages. When the story layout is shaky it makes the reader unsure of how to appreciate all the finer elements.

While I personally struggled to give my full approval of the story, I did find enough enjoyment to finish the story and want to see what happens next. I will be picking up the next book in the series when it becomes available and I encourage you to try this one out if able to. Let's see if you agree with my point of view or have an entirely different one all your own.

The Naughty Pine by Sibylla Matilde
Publication date: February 22nd, 2021

Synopsis:
On the fourteenth anniversary of my first divorce, I went to a kink club.

Thirty-three and no clue who I was. What I wanted out of life. I only knew it was passing me by and I was tired.

Tired of surviving the day-to-day.

Tired of trying to forgive myself for two failed marriages.

Tired of being a single mother with no semblance of a social life, of bending over backwards to be a fitting role model for my teenage daughter.

That was, until I stepped foot in The Naughty Pine.

I didn't plan to participate. I only went to appease the dark corners of my curiosity. To see something wild and taboo and full of life. Something sinful to shock the loneliness clean out of my system.

Don't know what I expected, but it sure wasn't him...

"It wasn't just one or two things about you. It was everything. And the more I knew you, the more I needed you. Your smile, your strength... your body."

I couldn't help but laugh at the growl his voice took on, and he grinned wide when he continued.

"Your laugh. Your heart. I love that you think you're plain and boring when, my God, you are anything but. I love how there's a part of you simmering under the surface waiting to explode with the touch of my hand."

Sibylla Matilde grew up on the back of a horse exploring in the mountain valleys of Southwest Montana. She attended a two-room schoolhouse 1st through 6th grade where she had same teacher the whole time. At the age of 12, Siby discovered historical romance, devouring the work of Jude Devereaux, Lisa Kleypas, and Karen Robards. She began writing in 2013 with her debut novel, Little Conversations, and self-published ten works over the next three years. She took a few years off to deal with life (it proved very difficult to move on from her Bangin' Mofos... they were a blast to write), but is back at the keyboard with new steamy stories brewing in her naughty little brain.

Music is her emotional trigger. Growing up with a Wagnarian-opera-loving mother, Sibylla loves music that digs deep into her soul and covers her with goosebumps. The soundtrack to her life includes different genres and generations, but her favorites include Thirty Seconds to Mars (she's a bit obsessive about Jared Leto, actually), Kings of Leon, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, and many other artists and bands. Her inspiration playlists on Spotify truly drive her writing, and she loves to share her eclectic taste with anyone who will listen.

Siby strives to write books that make the reader bask in the sweet glow of new love, burn hot with a passionate intensity, and day drink from gut-wrenching heartache. Her characters are not world-famous rock stars or billionaires, rather every-day small-town people experiencing their own extraordinary romantic adventures in the Rocky Mountains she calls home. "I think it was a good idea to have dinner on the deck instead of some restaurant." Will pointed his seltzer can at the incredible view of the ocean from the back of his family house.

I couldn't believe I was eating shrimp and clams with him, and actually had an appetite after talking for hours about my relationship with the Groves. Now that he knew, I was no longer on edge or anxious over the littlest of things.

"I would like to eat at a restaurant tomorrow. Maybe for breakfast?" I finished the last of my shrimp and stretched my arms over my head.

He finished his seltzer and opened another can from the case we'd bought earlier.

"Another seltzer already?" I joked, and finished mine.

"I wanted to get rid of the fishy aftertaste for our hot fudge chocolate pudding cake."

My mouth watered even though I was full with shrimp. "I have room for chocolate."

He tapped his chest. "A girl after my own heart."

"Really?" The ocean waves crashing in the distance covered my voice but not enough based on how he plunked at the tab of his can.

"It's too soon for us to have that conversation." He didn't sound too sure, and I wasn't sure what to think.

"We've had enough heavy talk for one day." I rose from my chair and gathered the dirty dishes. "I think I need to wait a bit before dessert. Want to clean this mess up then go down to the water?"

"I have a better idea." He tapped on his cell as he stood, and music started playing from it. A familiar pop ballad a few years ago filled the silence, and he held out his hand. "Let's dance."

I stepped back. "I don't dance."

"Don't or can't?" He came closer to me. "I'm a horrible dancer, but it's a beautiful night, and no one is here to see us, so why not?" He wiggled is fingers. "My parents would dance out here when they thought Arielle and I was sleeping. They always looked so happy when they did. I wanted to share that same feeling with you."

The sudden tension about my horrible dancing skills vanished. I may have even melted at what he said about his parents. It would be nice to have him wrap me in his arms and live in this moment--just me and him.

"Okay. But it's your feet at risk." I went to take his hand, but he kicked off his flip-flops.

"Let's dance barefoot."

I was able to take off my sneakers without losing my balance then fell into his arms. He wrapped me in an embrace, and we  swayed and circled around the deck.

"This is nice." I exhaled. "I've never danced this close to a boy before."

"The last time I danced with a girl was my senior prom." He then paused and dipped me over his arm.

"Will!" I gripped his shoulders in surprise, and he quickly lifted me up.

"I've always wanted to do that." He gave me a sneaky smile. "Let me lead?"

"Sure."

He spun me out then he twirled me under his arms a few times until I was dizzy. As he pulled me to him, I stopped but he kept his hand out.

"I wish you were my first," I muttered.

Instead of pulling me to him, he moved to me. I expected him to dance, but he drew my hand to his chest while he rubbed my arm with the other.

"We can still experience a lot of firsts together such as the fudgy chocolate heaven waiting for us." He lowered his head and huffed near my ear. "Also, I've never been with a girl or woman in the hot tub over there. How about you?"

I looked at the hot tub in the corner. He'd turned it on earlier for us to use if we wanted. At the time, I never thought we would, especially at night. I pushed aside my nervousness at what might happened between us in there, and after. "I've never been with a girl or woman in a hot tub either," I deadpanned.

He lowered his face to my shoulder and chuckled. I curled my arms around him as he circled us around. I joined in on his laughing until he had backed me against the deck railing.

As he straightened, he cupped my face. "You're in control here, not me. You tell me what you want to do. If you want to eat dessert and skip the hot tub, then we'll do that."

I gripped his wrists for leverage as I kept my gaze on his face. I was done looking away like I always had. Tonight, that would change with Will.

Synopsis:
Mckenna's never thought much of her nightmares, but on her seventeenth birthday, a vivid dream of burning at the stake awakens her dormant abilities, thrusting her into a world where faeries are real, spirits hold a grudge, and a High Priestess obsessed with a 16th-century prophecy is tracking her every move.

Now, her overprotective dads, Sean and Andre, are forced to tell her the truth--they know who her birth mother is, and her life is not the surrogate story she's always been told. Abigail, Mckenna's mom, is some sort of mystic, and Mckenna a Wise One.

Whatever the hell that means.

With the help of a persistent little wren and company of a newfound friend, Mckenna journeys to Ireland in search of her mother and real answers. Along the way, she learns to harness her innate magic and trust her intuition, as best she can anyway--Cillian, a kind and passionate delegate who crosses her path, is proving much harder to read.

Only her mother could truly help her halt her ill fate and prepare her for what's to come... before she gives in to the darkness she knows is buried deep within.

A sulphery scent filled the air, carried by a chill breeze. Pulled by the rushing sound of waves, Mckenna walked to the road's end. Far below, the sea whispered its calming notes, both melodic and fierce, as though longing to impact wisdom to the land and sky. "I hadn't realized we drove so high up."

"Beautiful, isn't it? Come, we've got a wee trek. Hope you're wearing comfortable shoes."

She followed Esme about a mile down a red dirt path, which gradually wound downwards to the water's edge.

"Where are we?" Mckenna said as a rocky landmass came into view.

"Below, where you see the rock formation--that's the Giant's Causeway."

As they drew nearer, Mckenna did a double take at the dramatic sight before her: At the foot of the cliffs lay uneven hills of thousands upon thousands of interlocked black rocks in the shape of hexagons. Like a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, the pieces fit together flawlessly. Esme urged Mckenna to walk around the site. She did, stepping up and down from stone to stone.

How could they have formed so perfectly? And why were they all at different heights? How were they floating on the sea?

That was when she realized... "Esme, these aren't rocks, are they? These are columns."

"Indeed. Forty thousand columns beneath the sea--basalt columns, meaning they're formed from lava. Some as tall as thirty-nine feet. All of this was the result of a volcanic eruption some fifty million years ago, during the Tertiary period--but of course, there's also an Irish legend that explains it all." Mckenna smiled at this. "A Scottish giant, Benandonner, challenged an Irish giant, Fionn MacCool, to a fight. Being very proud, Fionn accepted and built a causeway across the North Channel to Scotland for the two to battle. But when Fionn saw the size of Benandonner, he ran back to Ireland and had his wife disguise him as a baby.

"The funny bit is, when Benandonner saw the size of the baby, he thought, 'if the baby's that big, can't imagine his dad!' So, he bolted back to Scotland, destroying the cause way along the way. Across the sea to the Scottish isle of Staffa, there are the same columns, made of the same basalt."

"So, which story is true?" If faeries and ghosts existed, why not giants?

"Which do you believe?"
