Synopsis:
Buried deep below the everyday life of our society lives an underground world of nightmares--of violence and murder no one dares speak about. Contracts and laws weave the web of our culture together. Our Masters walk amongst us. They can be our friends, or the ones to make us disappear forever.
Where I once had found peace within my existence, it all ended with the death of my cruel, yet caring owner. My world shattered and I was taken back to the one place I had hoped to never see again--the cells of Whitlock--a subterranean fortress for slaves who await their new placement.
Now I have no rights. I have no say. My feelings and wellbeing are meaningless. Escape is impossible, but I have nothing left to lose.
To stand any chance of survival, I must give my life as collateral to the highest bidder: Soul for Sale.

Review:
Slave 24690, formerly known as Everleigh Davenport, has been under the watchful eye of her Master since she was 10 years old. She was used to the beatings and the assaults had long since stopped once she started to give consent. The more she obeyed, the less likely she was to be harmed. But once her Master was slain while she slept she was thrust back onto Slave Row by the owner of the Whitlock, Bram Whitlock, a man who has loved her and protected her for the better part for years. But has 24690 has come to learn there is no safety anymore. When Bram's best friend decides he wants her for himself there may not be anything she can do. It is either submit to her new Master or die at his hands.
I haven't read a book in a while that made me just completely have no clue what to expect. There were people that I was sure would never be killed who were offed really quickly in the book and I had a hard time imagining that the Master that 24690 ended up being paired with was meant to be the romantic interest of the story. I kept waiting for him to die himself to see what would come next in her story but he just... remains. The amount of trauma everyone goes through within the book made me rub a hand down my face. At one point a doctor told 24690's Master that she had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Really?! You think? Really putting that medical degree to work, aren't you, Doc?
Even though there were parts in the story that had me squirming in discomfort wondering just when it was going to become easier for the female protagonist I was absolutely hooked into the story. I was waiting for a change to happen and it most certainly did after a while. I was intrigued even while horrified 80% of the book.
I would strongly advise that nobody read this book and think this is the norm even for a Master/slave dynamic in reality. A lot of this, much like Fifty Shades of Grey, is just straight up abuse with zero ties to the BDSM community. There were no contracts signed, there were no discussions of boundaries and limits, and there was barely any consent on a good day. This was sex trafficking. Do not get the two confused and judge a community or a term based off the contents within this book. Even though I understood that this was pure shock value and not at all a glimpse into a real dynamic, I enjoyed the story. I could not wait to get my hands on the next book and see whether all the people who died in the first book truly stayed dead or if there would be a twist. Would 24690 ever be free of her slave title?
