Sins of the father... or the daughter?

I've discovered the family I was stolen from in the most unexpected place possible.

It's hard to believe I belong with them. A lifelong assassin mixing with people who campaign against criminals? There's no way in hell they'd accept the real me, let alone the brutal men who've welcomed me into their lives and their beds.

There has to be some way to make this work. I can't help craving a real home after so long without one.

And now that my enemies are targeting my birth family as well, they might need all the skills I can bring to bear.

But the farther I venture down this path, the harder it's becoming to tell who's really villain or victim here. When even more horrifying secrets come to light, will I choose the right side?

Review:
Dess may have finally discovered the benefits of having a big family who are devoted and cherish every moment they get. After a life of having nobody care about her well-being outside of the scope of completing a mission, she was embracing the fact that she suddenly had parents, a brother, grandparents, uncles and aunts, and even cousins. A big family of law-abiding citizens who crack down on crime at any chance they get. There in lies the rub. Dess is far from a model citizen. She's an assassin who has been killing people since she was old enough to hold a knife. How does she hope to fit in with a family that would sooner she had remained missing and presumed dead and turn out to be one of the shady people they despise. Add to that the fact that she has an undercover police officer pushing her towards family secrets that may be better left buried. What happens when Dess realizes that her picture perfect family is not everything she had thought they'd be? And what if they are even bigger monsters than the ones who are hunting her and her crew down to snuff them out?

This installment was trippy. I had a feeling there was something monumentally wrong with that family. I couldn't figure out what that something was but had a lot of theories. None of them came even remotely close to what those family secrets actually were. Poor Dess finally gets her family and now she has to figure out what is wrong with them and where to insert herself into the mix. I was kind of weary of her brother most of all. He just seemed to have this vibe about him that he knew exactly what was going on with her and that she was hiding something about herself from the family.

I did like seeing the relationship between Dess and her men finally reaching that realization of "love" pivotal moment. One by one they all started to succumb to the fact that their relationship with Dess may be a bit more than just admiration and really hot sex. But then again none of them every gave off the impression that that was all they were looking for. Except maybe Garrison a bit, but that's because the poor man masks his every feeling. But boy when he takes that thing off he quickly becomes my absolute favorite of the men.

I think with romance books that have a suspenseful feel to them it's very hard to figure out how much to lean either way. Either you lean into the mystery and give a few cameos of romance or you go the other way. I think this book was heavily focused on the mystery over the romance. There were very little pitfalls in the romance overall. There was one instance where they got a little ticked over her being with all of them but that got fixed monumentally quickly and then it just seemed they had zero issues afterwards. I would have liked to see at least a bit drama and resistance from at least one of the men to the whole sharing idea being as I think Julius and Talon were the only ones to have ever shared women together before. I felt like the romance got a little lost in all the action sometimes.

I think this was a great addition to the series. It brushed up and cemented the relationships between Dess and her men as well as through a bit of intrigue into the mix when it came to Dess's unusual family. Who are thoroughly messed up...

Series: Locked Security #3
Publication date: December 21st, 2023

Synopsis:
He's willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their love.

Growing up with absent parents, the only family Archer Bennett has ever known were his sister and her best friend Thea. And he was certain that no matter what path his life would take, he'd always have them by his side.

But life doesn't always go as planned.

And instead of living the life he dreamed of with the two people he loved most, he walks away from his family and ends up working for Locked Security, a firm that specializes in hostage situations and personal protection.

Thea Barlowe learned from an early age that to survive, she had to do whatever was necessary. When she gets an offer that would change her life, she jumps at the chance. Even if it means marrying a man almost double her age.

When Thea is in danger, her husband hires Locked Security to keep her safe. And her new bodyguard is someone she knows well. Archer.

There's nothing Archer wouldn't do for the only woman he's ever loved. Even if she's now married to another man.

Note from the author: This is the third book in the Locked Security Series and can be read as a standalone. There is no cheating (I promise) and the main character gets their HEA in this book. This book has originally been published under the pen name Sarah Peis.

Books are my passion and I have always been an avid reader. Sneaking my mom's romance books when I was too young to read them turned into a lifelong obsession. And now I not only read kissing books, I also get to write them. Dark romance and romantic suspense have always been favorites of mine to read, and I hope you enjoy the worlds and characters in my books as much as I love creating them. I currently live in a small town in Victoria, Australia, with the love of my life, our two little humans and two fur babies.

Review:
Everything that Dess had thought was true was a lie. Where she came from, who her targets were, and even the validity and morality of the organization she had worked with. When she came face-to-face with her handler again she had no idea just how deep it went. In fact, she had no reason to ever suspect that she was in any danger other than the sort she had with the cops turned hitmen that she was shacking up with. That all came crashing down around her when the rose-colored glasses came off. Now she must rely on the same men who she thought had ruined her life to try to figure out who she was before she was kidnapped and brainwashed on a very young age. All the while her presence in their lives brings danger for all of them. But she struggles to walk away. She feels at home with the Chaos Crew and is starting to form bonds with each of them in her own way. How could she abandon them now? And even if she could, would she when they could be the people who could actually help her figure out who she truly is?

Dess is back and just as badass as she was in the first book. Although now she is a little less hardened assassin and a little more of a confused amnesiac desperately trying to find out where she came from. Was she kidnapped as a child and trained to be a cog in the Household's organization? Are her parents even still looking for her? How do they connect to her previous handlers? All these answers and more are the things Dess is desperately trying to answer. Thankfully she has the Chaos Crew willing to help her any way they can. After they were so wrong about who she was and role she played, how could they not help?

The guys are starting to let Dess in more and I am loving seeing her interactions with each of them. She has a special bond all their own. Talon, the silent one, can understand her better than anyone else. He feels her emotions and he understands how she feels better than anyone. Her emotions are not traditional because she was raised in such an odd way. But Talon lets her know she is not alone. Garrison challenges her. He pushes her to be better and to do better if for no other reason but to shut him up. She pushes him too to drop his abundance of masks he wears for work and show her the real him. For him to say things and mean them. Julius pushes Dess as well but he does it more in a fatherly sort of way. That is not to say their connection isn't headed but he guides her when she isn't sure what her next step should be. He wants what is best for her and lives to be proud of her. And finally, Blaze. Blaze wants to see Dess happy at any cost. He will sacrifice his own wants and desires as long as he can bring her a level of peace and contentment she has never felt before. He is the one that calms her. Each of them have their roles to play and it's great watching them slowly grow.

This book was a lot more fast paced than the first. While the first was heavy on trying to establish the character and the plot, the second was focused a lot more on the romantic and emotional attributes. It still had an abundance of plot and intrigue but the sprinkling of romantic connection was more of a smattering. I enjoyed this book much more than the first. It kept me engaged and I never felt I needed a moment to take a break because I was bored. I look forward to seeing what more is instore for the Chaos Crew and their Ghost.
