Death Doesn't Bargain by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Series: Deadman's Cross #2
Publication date: May 8th, 2018
Synopsis (according to Goodreads):
Death Doesn't Bargain is the second historical fantasy title in New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon's Deadman's Cross series. Where Deadmen tell their tales, and every soul is damned or redeemed by the final choices they make.
The Deadmen are back...
But so are the demons who have broken free of their eternal prison and are bent on mankind's destruction. The worst of the lot is Vine, determined to claim their lives for taking hers. She will see the world burn... and has the perfect lure to destroy them all. One of their own.
Kalder Dupree has never known a day of mercy. Born to the cruelest of mer-races, he sacrificed himself for his crew and is in Vine's hands. He expects no mercy or rescue.
Yet Cameron Jack is determined to see Kalder free. As a Hellchaser, it's her calling, and she cannot allow even a not-so-innocent to be tortured for an act of kindness that spared her damnation.
To defeat evil, it sometimes takes an even worse evil, and Cameron is willing to do whatever she must to make this right. If Vine thought she had her hands full before, she hasn't seen anything nearly as powerful as Cameron's resolve.
Review:
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for participation in blog tour and for an honest review.
Sherrilyn Kenyon is a household name in the paranormal romance department that I tend to find myself ever visiting. She is one of the greats. So when I heard of a blog tour that was being offered to review her newest book in a brand new series, how could I pass it up? I chose to participate solely on the basis of who the author was. It was only after receiving the books that I realized how good a decision I had made.
The Deadman's crew is a group of recently deceased paranormal entities who have been charged with keeping the world's evil in check and also attempting to find redemption from their previous sins in the process. Deadmen Walking left off on a cliffhanger of mammoth proportions. Kalder made the greatest sacrifice he could to rescue Cameron from her prison in hell with her brother. Hell was something Kalder was very familiar with and a purity like Cameron did not deserve to be there. He gave up everything to free her and resigned himself to torment and torture for the rest of eternity. But he should know that the Deadmen would not allow one of their own to fester in the pits of damnation if there was a way around it.
Cameron stepped into this world set on freeing her brother and returning to her life as if nothing had happened. But then she met Captain Bane, the Deadmen's crew, and a handsome merman who exuded trouble from every pore. She was drawn to Kalder and when he was ripped from her grasp by his sacrifice her determination became the stuff of legends to get him back.
Cameron and Kalder's budding relationship spells trouble for both their lives. Between Cameron's overprotective brother and Kalder's ever present guilt over his mere existance, they have many obstacles in their way. But when war comes a'callin' again, will they be able to stand together strong with their Deadmen family or will their differences cause them all to fall apart and lose the battle they wage against the forces of evil?
I actually preferred Kalder and Cameron's story to Devyl and Mara's. Kalder I liked from day one of reading the series and I was curious what female would catch his eyes. Kenyon has a way of making her characters just blossom off the pages and wriggle their ways into your heart. Cameron's innocent was tangible. I wanted to scoop her up and hide her away in a thousand layers of bubble wrap. I loved the two of them together. Her fighting spirit and sharp tongue made me laugh more than a time or two.
The world that Kenyon created was something to rival even the Dark-Hunters series. While they are in the same universe there are clear distinctions between the two. This series made me want to re-read the Dark-Hunter series in it's entirety once more. Kenyon is an artist of epic perportion within the literary community. I look forward to reading more about the Deadmen's crew.
