Book Blitz with Excerpt + Giveaway: Forrest House by E.M. Hamill @songmagick @XpressoTours

Forrest House by E.M. Hamill
Publication date: January 11th, 2026

Synopsis:
Ander Forrest renounced blood magic to become a nurse-healer in his rural hometown, far from the drama of wizardry and espionage his sister Kate craved. When Kate goes missing in action, Ander finds himself the legal guardian of her gifted twins and receives a cryptic warning from Kate's husband to protect them before he, too, disappears.

Six months later, his former lover crash lands in the kids' bedroom via a spell only Ander's sister could have cast. Druid Cai Piper doesn't remember how he got there, but he knows he never stopped loving Ander, and that he was sent to protect him and the twins. Cai is strangely drawn to Forrest House and the land it stands upon.

With the secrets of a clandestine wizards' order hanging between them, Cai and Ander must remember how to trust each other as sinister forces move against the Forrest family--magical terrorists who want to exploit their rare sorcery and bring the world to its knees.

Cai cleared his throat. "You said I'm in America?"

"Yeah."

"And if I was sent by a bloodspell, does that mean Remy and Raven are here?"

"Well, of course." Ander blinked as Cai closed his eyes and sighed. He wasn't sure if it was relief or defeat. "You didn't know," he said.

"No. Edwyn kept it a secret, even from me." His fingers touched the blood-matted knot at the back of his head in tentative exploration. "I must have been out. I would never have let him send me otherwise. He was bleeding badly." His hand tapped an area high to the outside on his left leg. "Shot in the thigh."

Ander thought of all the major blood vessels there and breathed a plea to the Goddess that none were severed. "I didn't think the Fellowship used bullets."

"We don't. We were on a join mission with intelligence agents. Someone started lobbing spells at us and our allies turned and shot each other. He was hit in the crossfire."

"A Judas spell?" Ander frowned.

"I think so."

"Were you working with British intelligence?"

Cai opened his mouth to answer, then flinched and rubbed both sides of his head. "Some of my memories are missing. It's painful to think about."

"I think you might have a concussion."

"Maybe. But this feels more like it was blocked by a spell."

"By Edwyn?"

"I don't think he would have had time. Not surrounded by guns and magic." His breath became uneven again, and he sat unsteadily on the bed. "The harder I try to think about it, the more it hurts."

"Don't try right now." Ander came closer and put his fingers under Cai's jaw, forcing him to look up so he could peer into his eyes. Still no signs of a more serious head injury, but he wasn't satisfied until he ran his fingers under Cai's clotted hair to cradle the bruised lump beneath his palm, his senses open for new bleeding. He didn't discover any.

Cai stared at him as he pulled away, his face inches from Ander's. They both became aware at the same time of how close he was standing, his hands gentle on the back of Cai's head as if he were going to draw him into a kiss. Ander slowly stepped back.

"I have to find a way to get back to..." Cai frowned. "To... damn it! They took that, too. I don't know where we were." He looked to Ander with a desolate gaze. "I don't even know if Edwyn's alive."

"You can't ask the Fellowship?"

He stiffened. "No, I can't."

"I'd feel better if I could get you to a hospital."

"I'll be fine. I think it's clear I'm meant to protect you and the twins."

"Protect us from what?" He sat on the bed next to him. "What's going on Cai? Why wouldn't Ed tell you where the kids were?"

He didn't answer, his gaze slipping sideways.

Ander had not missed this infuriating silence. Kate had pushed Ander away with it, Edwyn maintained it, and Cai had used it to shut down questions when they were together.

He'd left Wales and come home because the people he loved most in the world could barely talk to him unless he was inducted into the Fellowship.

Fury rose in scarlet floods with Cai's refusal to speak. Ander let it crest. "That's fantastic. Of course you can't say anything. Then tell me how to protect them and get the fuck out."

"You don't--"

"They're all I have left of Kate! I need to know how to protect them!"

"If you're going to shout at me, then I will take that paracetamol now." His voice was soft, defeated. A crease furrowed the skin between his brows, and the tight lines of his body spoke of more pain than a headache. Ander didn't have to imagine the grief of not knowing if his brother was dead or alive. He knew only too well.

"I'm sorry." Ander exhaled, forcing himself to calm. "We aren't done," he said in a less strident tone. "You will tell me what's going on. Fuck the Fellowship and your code of secrecy! Those kids are my priority now. They've already lost their mother, and now maybe their father. No more."

To his surprise, Cai nodded. "I promise I will tell you what I know."

Disconcerted by his unexpected victory, Ander reluctantly let his anger drain away.

"Are you hungry? I'm making dinner."

"Starving. I can't recall when I last ate anything."

"It'll be ready in half an hour. Make sure you drink the rest of that water." He turned to go.

"Ander." Cai's expression was gentle as Ander looked back over his shoulder. "It's good to see you."

Story: There has only been a handful of thriller books that kept me on the edge of my seat as much as this one did. From the moment the book started the suspense kicked in. The author took their reader on a rollercoaster of suspenseful events that would make anyone's heartrate pick up. There were times when the pace of the text was too slow for my thirst to know what was happening and who was behind it all. I found myself struggling to not flip ahead just to find some peace within my own mind as far as whether the girls were going to make it out of their situation or not. The story kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I had to take frequent breaks from the book to try to calm down worrying about the two girls locked in a fight for their lives. The breaks never lasted more than five minutes as my desperation to keep reading got the better of me. The author did an excellent job of making the writing thrilling enough that the reader will have a hard time stepping away for long before needing to check on the characters they were growing fond of.

Characters: I found Olivia to be so relatable it was insane. What girl who reads doesn't also have a fascination with true crime just like Olivia did. She read all the stories, listened to all the podcasts, prepared herself for the worst but never expected it to ever actually happen to her. When she finally confronted with something that was synonymous with a lot of her research all the level-headedness went straight out the window. She followed none of the guidelines and acted purely on instinct. It was a good representation of the fact that even if a person is completely prepared for the evils of the world, we are still baser creatures who will go with our gut and instincts over any amount of levelheadedness. Laura was a great character too but Olivia stole the show by far. I also liked how the author played the two antagonists having one be the alpha to the other's beta and then having that dynamic threatened and twisted throughout the story. All the characters were important in one way or another and were depicted really well for their roles in the story.

Writing: I had zero issue with any of the writing of the story. The layout of the story was really well done with a clear and concise progression. There were no grammatical or spelling errors that I could find. The writing was not hard to follow or overly descriptive as some stories can seem to be. The only reason I almost skipped/skimmed some of the book was because of the level of suspense not any sort of long-winded explanations or depictions. All in all, there was nothing to really critique.

Overall: I think this book was my favorite read of 2026 so far. It was suspenseful, riveting, and dramatic without overdoing it. The characters, even the antagonists, had some likeable qualities to them (except Kyle; Kyle was a butthead). If I could read the book all over again from start to finish I think I would have taken more time to read through every single line of text to get a better mental image of what happened. I was carried away by the eagerness to know who was behind it all and why they were doing what they were doing that I may have missed some details that I would have loved to otherwise know. I think this is a great book for those who are interested in thriller books that touch on some hard subject matter without having any of it on page as must thrillers of this type may do.

A light breeze in the brisk night. That was all that could be heard after what felt like an eternity had passed.

The group of yellow lilies, showing how bright as the sun they were, led the rest of the flowers of the garden int heir dance with the wind. The trees, along with the other greeneries of the area, later joined them in the smooth sway.

Accompanying the garden was a pond. Although it was part of the abode to a powerful and prestigious family, it was made to be small and elegant for a certain person. One who had witnessed tragedy many times before within the cold walls of the castle.

This night was no different.

With the moon's mystic glow lighting the scenery, the hundreds of shards from the window could be seen spread across the castle garden. Each piece of glass reflected their only source of light.

A cloud of purple smoke suddenly appeared on the ground, right in the heart of the aftermath. It continued circling upward until it reached high enough. As the smoke dispersed, a young woman with white hair--whose lavish dress was once described to be as black as her soul--hastily emerged.

Her piercing amber eyes looked to the right. To her horror, the man who broke into her room just moments ago was lying completely still on the ground. Her hands were shaking at the memory of him over her, holding in one hand the red stone he used to cut her shoulder while the other had a dagger over her heart.

Just then, she heard a groan.

There it was again.

The young woman quickly turned, her eyes still adjusting to the moonlit scenery around her. She saw the elderly man who came to her aid during the heat of the attack lying prostrate on the grassy ground some feet away.

He budged, but his moans revealed the agonizing pain he was in.

She hurried to the man and turned him over. Blood was pouring from his mouth, his face losing its shade of life.

Her entire world came crumbling down. Debris crushed her chest. She could barely breathe.

"No, no, no! Ignazio?!" Her one hand gave support to his head as the other went to his back to help cradle him.

The pain within her grew worse when he opened his eyes, and she could barely see the tenderhearted light they always carried. Little by little, it was going out.

"Piccola Luna?" He grinned at seeing it was her. "I see the cut from the Impotente Gem did not completely hinder you. You truly are powerful."

"But I don't want to be," she exhaled in distress. "I never asked for it."

It was heard in her voice. It was seen in her eyes. Luna was terrified down to her bones of the power she possessed, as well as the thought of losing Ignazio.

"It does not matter. A great plan has been written for you and you mustn't run away from it." He coughed and coughed, blood spitting out.

What was Luna to do? She looked upon her dying friend, then at the man who made the attempt to end her.

Her eyes glided to her hand. The same one she waved a little ago to magically send her from her bedroom to the tallest tower to the garden.

She perked up at a brilliant idea. "Perhaps you're right. Maybe I am meant to have this power to help others. Once the effect of the stone has finished wearing off, I can use my magic to its full potential to save you and bring that man back to life--"

Ignazio grabbed Luna's hand. "No!"

Luna was confused. He had just told her one thing and now his actions, as well as his eyes, were telling her something else. At least, that's how it appeared to her.

"Luna... you know what happens to those who use their magic to break the laws of nature that God Himself set before us. Your power is unnatural and strong, but... if you go down that path..." Ignazio coughed more.

Her face fell the more she witnessed her friend slipping away. "Then what am I supposed to do? I... I can't let you die."

"You... you have... to, my dear. I won't let you become lost... like so many others have."

Luna glanced back at her hand. The stories of what became of the others who used their powers and abilities to break the supernatural laws came rushing into her mind. How deep they all fell into that never-ending pit where the day was a thing of the past.

Although those people possessed strong magic, none could hold a candle next to hers. They couldn't even light it.

Luna realized her downfall would be more rigorous than the others' due to the power she obtained. Her hand shook as she trembled all over.

"I'm so frightened." Her voice faltered.

Ignazio bestowed his final lesson. "Remember what I always told you... where there's life... there's hope. Just like how the moon cannot be so easily covered by the night sky... so must you not allow the magic you now possess to cover you or the hope I know still burns in you... Let... your light shine."

He began coughing and wheezing again. With all the strength he had remaining, his shaking hand held on to hers.

Every part of Luna ached with grief. Tears glazed over her eyes.

Before she could even think of how to respond, Ignazio continued. "Promise me, Piccola Luna... promise you will always keep the light in your heart... and use your new power to help others without breaking the laws of nature."

"I..." Luna couldn't bear to finish. She knew that if she did, it was truly the end.

But what other choice did she have? It was, after all, his dying wish.

She brought her only friend's hand--the same one that worked in her family's castle garden since the day he could hold his garden scissors--up to her red dahlia lips. After the kiss, she said, "I promise."

A final breath and he was gone--a smile gracing his face the entire time.

There was no stopping the tears from flooding Luna's face. Both of her arms wrapped around her friend and brought him into her. She felt his head fall back as she hugged him as tightly as she possibly could.

All while she became completely engulfed in her sorrow.

A group of royal soldiers appeared with their weapons drawn, ready for anything. They were all surprised to see their princess holding the corpse of one of the servants while another figure lay lifeless in the distance.

"Lieutenant!" called the one whose silver armor was more extravagant than the others'.

The lieutenant approached with no time to waste. "Si, Captain."

"Go to our king and queen," the captain ordered. "Inform them of how their daughter has finally succumbed to her second curse."
