Her Darkest Hour by Suzy Henderson
Publication date: May 8th, 2025

Synopsis:
In the shadow of war, a young woman must choose: deny her magic or wield it to stop a traitor before Britain falls.

England, 1939. A young witch. A nation at war. A spy hiding in plain sight.

As war looms over Britain, Eliza MacLean wants nothing more than an ordinary life. Raised on the Isle of Mull, she's spend years denying her gifts--just as her mother insisted: But her grandmother taught her differently, whispering ancient knowledge of herbs, charms, and spells.

When her grandmother dies, Eliza seeks refuge in Cambridge with her cousin and the women of the WVS. But beneath its spires and blacked-out streets, Cambridge hides more than just scholars and soldiers. A secret network of witches is working to protect Britain from an enemy who knows magic is real--and seeks to weaponize it.

Drawn into the fight, Eliza is thrust into a world of espionage, deception, and occult warfare. Her rare abilities catch the attention of MI5 agent Alex Fletcher, who needs her help to unmask a deadly spy before it's too late.

As she learns to harness her power, Eliza finds herself torn between duty and love, risking everything for Jim, a fighter pilot whose fate seems written in the stars. But war is ruthless, and magic has a price.

With the spy closing in and the war reaching new heights of peril, Eliza's only hope of saving those she loves is to embrace the very magic she's spent a lifetime hiding--no matter the cost.

But some powers were never meant to be used.

Perfect for fans of A Discovery of Witches and The Rose Code, Her Darkest Hour blends historical fiction with supernatural intrigue in a gripping tale of war, witchcraft, and sacrifice.

The Witches Who Went to War: The Real History Behind Her Darkest Hour
When I started writing Her Darkest Hour, I wasn't just inspired by the idea of witches in wartime--I was captivated by the real, historical belief that magic could be used to defend Britain.

In researching the book, I discovered a lineage of magical resistance stretching back centuries. In 1588, when the Spanish Armada threatened England, tales emerged of magical circles cast to summon storms. During the Napoleonic Wars, rural communities quietly turned to cunning folk--herbalists, charmers, and wise women--to protect them from invasion.

But perhaps most fascinating of all is the rumour that during WWII, a group of witches gathered in the New Forest to perform a ritual known as the Cone of Power. Their aim? To stop Hitler from setting foot on British soil. It sounds like folklore--but it's part of Britain's strange, often forgotten magical undercurrent. The war wasn't just fought on beaches and battlefields. It was fought, too, in glades and gardens, by those who believed the spiritual realm had a part to play.

That hidden history became the beating heart of Her Darkest Hour. Eliza MacLean, a young Scottish witch, is drawn from her quiet life on the Isle of Mull into a war she never expected to fight. Recruited by MI5, she finds herself hunting a German spy in Cambridge--but with magic, not guns.

I wanted to honour both the women who stepped into wartime roles and the lesser-known stories of those who used ancient knowledge to protect what they loved. Eliza's magic is not flashy or cinematic--it's rooted in emotion, empathy, and intuition. And that, perhaps, is what made it so powerful.

In the end, this book is a tribute to the quiet guardians of our past--those who lit candles, traced symbols, whispered prayers to old gods, and believed, fiercely, in their country's protection.

What if those rituals worked?

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy discovering Eliza's journey in Her Darkest Hour.

Series: Jackson Family Distillery #4

Synopsis:
Catching a woman breaking into his car was not the way Ace Jackson wanted to start his day. Finding out she's the new hire at his family's distillery is even worse. Millie Danes told the grumpy Adonis she wasn't breaking into his car, but did he believe her? No! The guy has a stick up his butt bigger than the pine trees gracing the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, he's her new boss or she'd try and see if she could melt that icy exterior. But she has more on the line than a job, she needs funds to start her dream. Her very one aerial studio.

When a theft is discovered at work, Ace enlists Millie's help as a spy in exchange for the money to build her dream. Their tentative truce becomes complicated when desires fan the flames of temptation. In the battle of love, who will fall first?

"Ten thousand," she said with a straight face.

Ace's jaw dropped.

"Are you fucking serious?"

"Okay, twenty." She crossed her arms over her chest and sent him her own smug smirk.

He scowled. "That's not how negotiations work, Millie."

Lifting one shoulder in a small shrug, she turned and headed for the door. "Fine. If you don't need me--"

"Five."

The offer sounded from behind her, resigned but firm. She paused. She could work with five.

"It's a ridiculous number for what I'm asking, but if this keeps going on we stand to lose a hell of a lot more than that, so five. Take it or leave it."

Giddy excitement filled her. She'd done it! She was getting the money she needed for her studio. Her dream would become a reality.

Schooling her features, she turned with a serious expression pasted on her face and stuck out her hand. "Deal."

Ace grabbed her hand and shook, muttering something about her being a stubborn pain in his ass under his breath before quickly letting go.

Gracing him with her most charming smile, she winked. "Buddy, you just bought yourself a spy."

His gaze took her in, a wary expression filling his eyes. "Why do I get the feeling I just sealed my doom?"

And he called her dramatic.

She huffed out a laugh. "Because you always think the worst of people."

"I do not," he frowned.

"You're right." She moved closer and patted his cheek like one would do a petulant child. She had to stand up on her tippy toes but the deepening scowl on his face was worth it. "You're a bastion of believing the good in everyone. Happy now?"

Ace grabbed her hand, tugging her closer until she nearly fell into him. She had to place her free hand on his chest to steady herself. A small gasp left her as her palm encountered the firm harness of him. The steady thundering beat of his heart pumping against her hand. His thumb rubbed small circles in her palm as he stared down at her with a wolfish grin.

"I'll be happy when the thief is caught, so get out there and do your job."

Normally Millie bristled at anyone commanding her to do things, but this weird back and forth power control thing she had going on with Ace was... exciting. Something about pushing this man's buttons tempted her in a way she'd never been before. Knowing she was playing with fire, Millie trailed her fingers down his chest, stopping right above the snap of his jeans.

"Sure thing, boss," she said in a voice far huskier than she'd intended it to be.

With that she pulled her other hand out of his and turned. Moving across the office she left, closing the door behind her and leaning against it to catch her breath.

"This is either going to be a thrill ride or a disaster," she whispered into the distillery, not sure if she was referring to the spy mission or the dangerous flirting with Ace.

Either way, it wouldn't be boring.

Review: Captured by Rosa Lee

Captured by Rosa Lee
Series: Highgate Preparatory Academy #1
Publication date: June 10th, 2024
Pages: 479
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Synopsis:
Who of us isn't a little bit of a monster too?

Rivers of red changed my life, in ways that even I am unaware of.

I went from being a happy, carefree, and comfortable London girl to moving across the pond and landing at the exclusive Highgate Preparatory Academy, a school for the kids of the rich and powerful, right before my senior year.

Fate placed me into the arms of four beautiful, broken, rich boys; the Black Knights of Highgate Prep.

Loki, Jax, Kai, and Ash.

All rich as Midas, all beautiful, and yet they all carry scars that run so deep, I don't know if there's a way to ever heal them.

Our connection is immediate and earth shattering. The stuff of fairytales. My knights wear tarnished armour. They're angels that have fallen into the pits of hell and been baptised anew in blood, emerging devastatingly beautiful but with the souls of demons.

But fate is fickle, and one night my life tips on its axis again, making me doubt my dark knights as their terrifying secrets are revealed.

Yet life is never quite what it seems, and even knights must bow to tyrant kings.

Apparently, the grass is not always greener on the other side.

It's covered in crimson too. And none of our hands are clean.

Captured is the first book in a scorching dark contemporary romance, where our bold leading lady won't have to choose. Boundaries will be crossed, both figuratively and literally.

If you crave emotionally scarred, impossibly attractive young men who thrive in the shadows, a fiercely outspoken young woman unafraid to wield colourful language, and steamy encounters that will leave you breathless--appearing in nearly every chapter--then Captured is a novel you won't want to miss.

Review:
The British have invaded the states and she is looking for a new lease on life. Lilly Darling was looking for any excuse to escape London and her traumatic past that she left behind. When a mysterious uncle comes out of the woodwork after her mother's death, she is all too happy to go away to America and join the prestigious academy that he was once a student of. What could it hurt? She would no longer be within range of the area that she lost her soul and maybe she could learn to shut her eyes and not see a river of blood behind her eyelids. What she wasn't expecting was to move in with four men who had taller walls around them than the Empire State Building. But Lilly has always been good at winning people over and she slowly starts to do so until she realizes that there is a lot more to the men she is living with than meets the eye. They are all beautifully broken and slaves to their parentage whether they wish to be a part of it or not. They are being groomed to take over their family's business and all the bloody dealings that go with it. When Lilly discovers just how deep their connections go she wonders if the men she was growing so fond of were fallen angels worthy of redemption or damned to their fate forever.

I was absolutely enthralled by this story from the very beginning. Lilly is such a breath of fresh air type of character that I found myself so taken with her. The way she dressed made me start googling her outfits so I could see her better in my mind. She was quirky and fun but also had that edge to her that made you realize that she is just as wounded and traumatized as the rest of them are. It made them a good match all around and soldered their connections for me. I loved how colorful her words were and how exasperated she was sometimes with the antics of the men. A few snippets of Lilly's colorful thoughts and impressions are as follows:

"I swear every time that man speaks, somewhere a fairy orgasms."

"I'm going to die if this keeps up. My gravestone shall read; ‘Here lies Lilly Darling. Died from horniness.’"

"Money may not be able to buy you happiness, but, apparently, it can enable underage drinking."

Add to that the damaged and heartbreaking men that she surrounded herself with and it made my heart melt. They were all so damaged but also so determined to be better than their parents wish for them that they were a delight. I always have my favorite and while Loki would be an obvious choice with his charisma and good-humor, Ash stole my heart. Ash, the leader of the boys, takes everything onto his shoulders. For him, he will die before he ever sees any of his brothers in pain or danger. He will do what he has to to endure his upbringing and keep them safe. When that extends to Lilly I can see the kind of man he was made to be. There is so much more to leading than just having a dominant personality. There is also the command to keep the respect he is garnered by the others. If let off his leash, he could do some great things and I look forward to seeing if that happens in the future books.

The relationships between Lilly and the men are so different from one to the next but also so well done that its hard to not see how they all connect together. I can't picture Lilly with just one of them because they all have different facets that compliment her so well. That is the mark of a truly well written and developed reverse harem for me. If there is no way in my mind to ever see the protagonists as going solo with any one of the men.

This story had me hooked from the start and the surprise twist at the end made me gasp. I am so excited to read the next book and see where Lilly and her men head next.

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it's true, the only thing bigger than an overactive imagination, may be women's hair!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life - I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations - regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal... I don't want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I'm going to tell you about Kindle.
I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I'll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died - weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn't have to be alone.
That time in my life was terrible. It's everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.
Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness - it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it... It never happened.
Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn't a time she wasn't there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It's its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn't be here today without her.
