Guest Post
If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
There's a poet in me that would spend the time with my wife at a pond, lazily watching the wind blow the reeds, letting the sound of ducks farting waft over us as we partake of some pastries. Utter nonsense. Thankfully, I am a pragmatic man. No, I will ready a horse with barding, and myself don my assortment of the finest LARP ready armor and weapons. I, as my forefathers before me, will then sack Euro Disney.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
The worst kind. Picture a world where everyone is forced to wear shoes one size too small. Where roving bands of Imperial Inquisitors scour the land, inflicting upon the populace a ceaseless march of the worst sort of memes. Where butter is currently, and even the sweet escape of death is polluted -- as the solemn death dirges are replaced by the upbeat crooning of Rick Astley.

When did you realize that you wanted to be an author? When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I was sitting in math class some odd twenty years ago, thinking to myself "this is mind-numbingly boring, but not really painful. If only I could add the long wait times, to the feeling of grinding a lemon in my eye, daily..." Soon after I discovered writing, and editing, the query letter dance - but only then did my dream come true!

No, really, I have been dabbling since my early teens. It was only when I was pushing towards the time when I could drink legally, that it clicked for me. On the plus side writing is a profession that goes well with potential alcoholism.

The second question is a bit more difficult to nail down, and it also depends; on my mood, on the time of the day, or if I have eaten anything. I.E. I am saying there are days where, even now, I don't consider myself a 'real' writer. It apparently is a common problem, and I am no exception.

Once upon a time I didn't consider myself a writer until I was published. The goal line moved to being traditionally published. Then an award-winning author. Then to some nebulous financial baseline.

Nowadays? I just write, and try not to think of the existential stuff.

Besides writing, what other secret skills do you have?
I enjoy taking blocks of wood and torturing myself with carving them until the abomination comes out to resemble something close to the boat. I don't know why I continue to do this, but it was born out of reading Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. Afterwards I just had to have a model boat, so I made one.

You were born in Alabama but now live in Switzerland, how have these life experiences influenced your writing?
That would be a book by itself. A deep, boring, and weird book with a lot of references to cheese... But a book, nonetheless. Perhaps in the simplest of ways it helped instill within me a "I am going to do this no matter what," mentality that helps me complete goals. In a more complex, deeper assessment I think moving from a place with a lot of wide-open spaces, to a crammed country like Switzerland has created within me a desire to roam. And there are a lot of beautiful, inspiring places to visit in Europe.

Your work contains a lot of humor - why do you take this approach?
I believe in balanced writing. For instance, having parts of beautiful prose peek out over quick, terse text. In this case the humor is to balance the darkness. And the Melody of Three can get dark, and very scary at times.

Tells us about your main characters, what makes them Tick?
Christaan De Rein is eccentric, fussy, but also brave and witty. He is known as The Inspector, representing his role among other Artisans (Sorcerers) in the Curatorium. But there is a lot more to him from his title. He has a long history of love, loss, and well, plain living that he carries with him. In short, I tried to make him human and grounded -- as grounded as an old fop that doesn't age can be.

Niena is a dreamer, and a bit naive -- though the latter is fast changing, as she is learning not to trust others so quickly. She is strong willed, compassionate, but also unsure of herself. Her bravery is a subtle affair. I like to think of her as any typical teenager, thrust into a position of too much attention and danger.

What do you think about the current publishing market?
That is a loaded question, and one I've devoted more than a few blog posts too. The short and sweet of it, rather saturated. But I am not just talking about just the number of books. There is a glut of related publishing services, all promising miracle solutions. And the sad part of it, is that for every valid one there are 10 scams, helping to create a weird tango where it is easy to publish a book, but harder to get noticed.

This also has the alarming effect of suppressing independent authors. There will always be those that are one and done, broken down by the amount of work to initial results ratio. Well, when editing, promotional, and organizational services fail you (because they weren't legitimate), it can add to the stress. This increases the literary graveyard. So, while the barrier to entry is lesser, the fence to hop over for financial success is a bit more difficult to manage. And any time taken out to research a company is time that could be spent elsewhere.

My personal suggestions to aspiring authors is to read the related writing forums and groups (20booksto50k facebook group is solid for marketing), and to invest in a newsletter early on. For the latter Storyorigin is free, and will give you a lot of opportunities to grow your reader base, get reviews, and others.

"Excuse me, miss."

Looking up with a smile, ready to accommodate another song request, she was taken aback, her breath catching in her chest. The man was tall, dark, and handsome and he looked very familiar. She started to panic, trying to place him in the shadowy light.

"I didn't mean to startle you. I wanted to ask... the last song you just sang. I seem to recognize it but can't quite place the name. Who is the artist?"

The molecules in her brain shifted, and she was suddenly aware of who was standing before her. In an effort not to faint or start screaming, she placed her hand on her heaving bosom and tried to breathe again, all the while his steady gaze penetrating her entire being. She swallowed hard, trying to get some moisture back into her throat so she could respond, but it felt as if her entire mouth had been force-fed a bucket of sand. The gorgeous man was holding a martini glass and looked like he had just stepped out of a high-class advertisement, his designer clothing obvious.

"Umm... that song was..." She cleared her throat. "It's a Richard Rodgers, umm, song." Eying his drink a second time, she reached for it and took it from his hands. "Do you mind?" She didn't wait for his response, anxious to send moisture onto her hot tongue, throwing the drink back in one gulp before choking on the alcohol burning down her throat. "Oh my god! What was that?" she asked scowling.

The gorgeous man gently took the empty glass back from her, his index finger brushing her hand slightly. "Well, it was my gin martini. May I get you something more to your liking?" He tried not to smile but his blue eyes tinged with humor and gave him away.

Lauren held the back of her hand to her mouth and stared at him. "I know who you are," she whispered, wide eyed. "You're the super..." He interrupted her quickly by abruptly grabbing her by the elbow.

"Let me buy you a drink." He started to lead her to the mahogany bar where her friend Tim was bartending.

"Hey Lauren. How's it going?" Tim asked as he wiped down the polished wood in front of them. Could he tell she was coming undone being in the presence of one of the most stunning, sough after male models on the planet? Flashbacks of a recent trip to New York with some of her girlfriends came to mind when they stood in the middle of Times Square and took several pictures of the man's famous image plastered on a giant billboard. His gorgeous, half-naked body was on full display for all the world to see wearing nothing but designer underwear. She started to swoon just thinking about it.

"Good, Tim." Her reply came out a little too quickly, her voice three octaves higher than normal. She glanced at the illustrious man who stood mere inches from her, not sure if she would be able to continue a conversation. Her entire body felt like it was buzzing and she feared she might hyperventilate. Slowly, she eased onto the leather bar stool, hoping it wasn't obvious she was coming undone.

"Sparkling water for you?" Tim asked knowingly. Lauren never drank while she performed, a lesson she'd learned many years ago when she had made the mistake of going to happy hour with friends before a show. Consuming one too many shots of tequila, she couldn't remember the lyrics that night, and was lucky the manager hadn't fired her.

"Yes, please," she squeaked.

"And for you, sir?"

Leaning his strong arm against the back of her bar stool, he reached for a cashew in a crystal bowl causing his bulging bicep to come very close to grazing her breast. "I should like another gin martini, Tim. Hendricks please, with a cucumber garnish." His British cadence was sophisticated and debonair, accentuating his high-class image.

Tim placed a green tinted bottle of sparkling water in front of Lauren and proceeded to mix the martini. As she tried to open her drink with trembling hands, she could feel heat tinge her cheeks. The damn cap wouldn't budge.

"Allow me, Lauren," he offered, the "L" of her name sounded beautiful with his lilting articulation. He effortlessly turned the cap just once and handed it back to her, his chiseled features dangerously close to her lips. She smiled politely before taking a sip and almost choked when he started to speak, palming her back with his hot hand.

"Feeling any better?"

She licked her lips and placed the bottle back on the bar. "Yes, thank you." Her face continued to flush, and she was surprised when he leaned closer and whispered into her ear.

"It's nice to meet you, Lauren. You have a lovely voice."

His warm breath made her insides tingle and she had to inhale deeply before she could mutter a reply. "Thank you. It's nice to meet you too... you have a lovely... face." She forced herself not to roll her eyes after the words came out of her mouth, pressing her lips together in a tight line. What a stupid thing to say.

Excerpt
Alexandre left the office and ambled back to the harbor. Merchants haggled over prices and the condition of shipments, boys called out the name of hotels and taverns hoping for a seaman's newly paid wage. Doxies weaved among the throng, offering a smile to anyone ogling their wares. His eyes searched the crowded harbor and found the mast of his own schooner. Taking in a long, satisfied breath, he surveyed the busy dock as he dodged out of the path of a fast-moving cart.

Once past, a scuffle on the other side of the yard caught his attention.

"Let go of me!" cried a feminine voice.

Alexandre wiped the sweat from his brow and squinted against the morning sun. The voice sounded female. Most women roaming the docks were hoping for a man's touch--and the coin in his pocket. Did the customer refuse the price or want something for free?

"You dirty, low-down, sniveling--" The voice pitched higher with each curse.

He spotted a petite woman, holding her ground like a soldier against the enemy. She wore a shapeless linen shirt with a wide collar over a pair of duck trousers. The outfit of a seaman. Deep ruby bounced off her shoulders and flashed with gold as her head bobbed, her palms patting down her loose clothing while she searched for something. The object of her tirade towered over her, giant hands on his hips, shaking his head. From the wide crooked nose and broad face, Alexandre assumed the rotund man wasn't a stranger to the receiving end of a fist.

"You have no proof. It's my word against yours. Who do you think the authorities will believe? An indentured servant or a citizen and business owner?" The stout man sniggered.

The redhead produced a piece of paper and waved it in the air. "I have the original document. I've kept it hidden away all these years, waiting for this day." Her blue eyes glittered triumphantly. Even in the ill-fitting clothes, she was a beauty.

"I've never laid hands on you, Katie, but you're trying my patience." The man's face hardened. "You've been fed, never beaten or... abused in any way. I've been a good master, and this is how you repay me?"

"I want my freedom. I've earned it. Rory is free, and you bought us on the same voyage."

Alexandre admired her spunk. Katie wasn't backing down. He settled against a tower of crates, interested in how this scene would play out. With unexpected speed, the man snatched the paper from the girl's hand and held it high above her head as she reached on her toes to take it back. He ripped it into shreds, a gleeful grin showing two blackened teeth.

Alexandre's jaw ticked. He wouldn't mind wiping the sneer from those flat features. He hated to see the little spitfire taken advantage of.

"You were saying?" he jeered.

Her mouth fell open, large blue eyes sparkling with unshed tears. Alexandre had the oddest urge to scoop her up in his arms and take her on board L'Evasion. He'd probably get a black eye for his effort, he thought with a grin.

The oaf grabbed the girl's wrist again, and her knee jerked up. "You're coming with me, you little"--he doubled over, grabbing his crotch--"oomph!"

Katie turned on her heel and ran in Alexandre's direction. He ducked between the rows of crates, and as she dashed by, he reached out and caught her waist. Pulling her close, he turned them to face the opposite direction, concealing her slight form with his own. His grip tightened as she fought like a hellcat.
