Series: A Short Story Anthology, Vol. 2
Publication date: September 9th, 2025

Synopsis:
Welcome to Thorn Valley, where the dead make the rules and the living follow them.

Everyone knows what goes on at the Thorn Valley Cemetery. The locals never stray from the three sacred rules.

Don't speak when you enter through the gate.

Never visit at night.

Never visit alone.

Seems simple enough, but in this town, nothing is simple, and no place is safe. Don't let the white picket fences and cozy shops on Main Street fool you. Here, the dead don't sleep, and they're always in charge.

Escape to the small, eerie town of Thorn Valley in this fresh collection of spine-tingling tales from the much anticipated next installment of THROUGH THE WOODS.

Excerpt from "Night Fever"
Then I see where I'm standing, at the edge of an ivy-covered gate, black iron, sharp-toothed rods I recognize well, even in the damp, cold night. The entrance to the Thorn Valley Cemetery. My freezing fingers lace tighter around Eva's, and I look down at my bare, mud-caked feet. I'm in my blue satin nightgown, half-sheathed by my lace ivory bathrobe. Gasping, I cover myself and whirl around in the damp cold, searching the night for signs of life or reason.

"Why am I here? What are we doing here?"

Eva releases my hand but keeps her eyes locked on mine as if I might disappear. She shakes as she tugs the guilt from her shoulders to wrap me in its warmth. "You had another spell," she says, still trembling as she guides me away from the gate. "You were trying to climb up and over. Your sister called me and said you were gone, that your bedroom window was open, the curtains pulled wide. She woke up to make tea because she couldn't sleep and had a feeling she should check on you."

"Another dream."

"Yes."

"They're getting worse."

"I know."

"I was... on the coast." Dizzy and dazed, I pause for a beat to get my bearings. Eva stalls too, waiting patiently for me to find my balance. "The sea was coming for me, it wanted to drown me. I was running, then climbing... trying to climb toward the sky."

I can feel Eva's horror, her pupils like frozen, black saucers stunned as they study my face.

"There was so much sun, so much blue, an unwavering stillness on land. But the sea... it roared, it wouldn't stop reaching for me. I felt an earthquake, an imminent tsunami in the distance, even in the stillness. I couldn't let it have me, I just couldn't--"

Eva takes hold of my shoulders, carefully turning me toward her. I know in that moment my eyes are tinged with a ripple of madness, and that she sees it, too. "This is going to stop."

R.M. CARPUS is the author of THE CITY WIFE and co-founder of Wraith House. Born in Philly and raised in sunny Southwest Florida, her nomadic spirit has carried her all over the U.S. She now resides in the moody Pacific Northwest, where she dwells with ghosts of the bygone grunge era, always on the lookout for Eddie Vedder, killer whales, and inspiration for the next book. When she's not reading or writing, she's engrossed in '90s music and reruns, catching a film at SIFF, or hiding away in the San Juan Islands or the Olympic Peninsula. She loves animals, the ocean, and spooky season.

I grew up in southern New Jersey, reading fantasy and paranormal books. I love anything that whisks me away to another world, and I wanted to create my own worlds for readers like myself to enjoy. I believe reading is not only an escape from our real-world problems, but a way to expand our minds, keep us sharp, and bring us joy. What I love about books is that we can use our imaginations to "see" what the author sees. When we watch TV or a movie, we can turn off our creativity and mindlessly view what the creators intended for us. But reading requires the engaging of our creative minds. I hope that you will enjoy my stories as much as I have enjoyed writing them. -- D.M. MILLION

Review: Exhibition by Candace Wondrak

Exhibition by Candace Wondrak
Series: Voyeur #2
Publication date: January 1st, 2022
Pages: 327
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Synopsis:
The devil no longer rules the Dollhouse. I do.

The old me is long gone. The girl who used to pretend to be everything my parents wanted is dead. I thought finding my sister and my boyfriend together was life-changing, but it turns out getting shot is one hell of a wake-up call.

I need to go back to Hillcrest.

I need to see my family again... and my sister. To put them fully behind me, I need to show them the new me. And this new me? She's a bit of an exhibitionist.

I like being owned. I like being controlled and put on display.

Lake caters to my good side, while Roman and Carter fuel the bad. All three make me feel alive, and together? Together we'll give my family one hell of a show.

They'll think their prodigal daughter has returned... but really, I'll only be there to fuck everything up, and I'll do it with a smile.

It's my turn to be bad.

Exhibition is a RH/Why Choose romance, recommended 18+for steamy content and swearing. This book is not dark per se; however Roman and Carter don't play nice with others. Expect some violence. Recommended to be read after Voyeur and the A Death so Sweet trilogy, as this book takes place after the events of both.

Review:
Nothing makes all the unresolved issues from your past stand out in bold neon lights like having a brush with death. Zoey thought she could put the past behind her and carry on her life at the Dollhouse with her three boyfriends, but after getting shot she wanting nothing more than to completely sever ties with the people of her past and be able to start the journey into her new life without the shackles still holding her back. Thus comes the plan to go back to Hillcrest and shake things up for good. Make her parents write her off as a lost cause and her sister realize that she did her favor by sleeping with her boyfriend but not before she feels exactly what it felt like for Zoey. Her men are only too happy to help her on her mission even if they feel it may be a little silly in the long run. But that's the thing about love, you'll do the darnedest things for it. But when Zoey returns, will the skeletons of her past end up dragging her back under before she can exert her revenge?

This book was decent, albeit very much needed to be read after the Death So Sweet series. The shooting was never really described in this book as it happened in one of the other series books as a crossover. There were a lot of references that flew over my head even though I read the series a few years ago. I didn't like the lost feeling or not having that emotional connection to the characters I used to love from the previous series. It was hard to remember their stories and made me consider stopping and going back to the previous series to re-read. I like when series are all combined within one universe so we can check in on some of our previous characters, but I wish there was a list for Candace Wondrak that put all the books in timeline order so I knew what to read first. If I hadn't read the Death So Sweet series I would have been completely lost.

I felt bad for Wyatt. I kept waiting for him to show he was actually a bad guy all along to make up for the way Zoey treated him. I almost feel it would have been better if there had been a little bit of nefariousness from him to make the main female character less of a bitch for how she used him. I do kind of hope that Wondrak uses Wyatt in one of her future book series (I haven't checked to see if she did). It'd be a nice sort of prequel to him finding his own dynamic being as he seemed a lot more open to the multiple boyfriend thing than even Lake was at first.

I think that the book was good but it wasn't anything that I would rave about to friends on my various book reading Discord servers. It was adequate and a cute story. But I had a hard time wrapping my brain around why Zoey felt the need to go back to ruin her parents and sister's lives. Why not just forget them and live your life? That is what a normal person would do. But this is fiction so of course it doesn't go that way. I think if she had another more fundamental reason for it other than just emotional, I would have liked the book a lot more.

It was cute duology and I wouldn't skip it if you are reading Wondrak's books. It is a lot lighter than some of the others she has written.

Excerpt
Snapping back from my little trip down memory lane, a blaring siren pierces my helmet. I momentarily pull my gaze from the road to check the sideview mirrors for the cause.

I catch a glimpse of the police car behind me and ease my bike into the safety zone out of its way. Upon doing so, the marked car pulls behind me. I come to a stop putting the kickstand down and shutting the engine off.

Seriously? Relaxing my arms I force a breath out and rest my hands on my thighs waiting for the cop to approach me.

Hearing footsteps closing in, I turn to face them. Despite my helmet blocking a clear view, I notice a tall, muscular figure stopping a few feet in front of my bike.

Meeting his gaze, I see a man in uniform wearing dark sunglasses and his department issued hat resting his hands on his belt.

"Ma'am." He gives me a slight nod. "I need your license and registration, please."

Resisting the urge to ask the common question of 'did I do something wrong officer', I settle for, "No problem."

Unzipping my vest I reach for the inside pocket, where I keep the paperwork. Pulling out what I need, I hand it to him and sit up tall while he looks them over.

As he scans my driver's license and motorcycle registration, I furrow a brow studying his facial features. But when he senses me watching him, he lowers his hand and tips his head up staring back at me.

"Is something wrong?" The cop asks.

Curiosity gets the best of me the more I hear his voice. "Have we met before?"

Giving me a boyish grin as if he thinks I'm flirting with him, he dips his head and chuckles. "Uh, no ma'am. I can assure you we've never met, at least not until now."

He hands me the papers when I say, "I guess not then. So, was I speeding or something?"

"Technically Ms. Marks you were going a little over the speed limit, but that's not why I stopped you. There's been a bike just like yours driving recklessly and cutting drivers off for a few weeks now. I'm just trying to keep everyone on our island safe."

"Well, I appreciate that."

He takes a step, stopping next to me while pulling his glasses halfway down his nose looking over the top of them. "I hope you enjoy your stay ma'am."

Peeking at the name tag on his chest, I state, "Thank you Officer Lewis. I'm sure I will."

When he eases his car around me, I slide the papers back into my pocket. My brows raise up as his voice and what I could see of his eyes tickle a memory. "Wait, Officer Lewis? They wouldn't use first names here, would they?"

I stare at the back of his patrol car as he drives away. That can't be my Lewis, no way. He didn't live here when we met. I could never forget his voice, eyes, or smile even after all of these years.
